Is personal freedom a reality or a myth ? Does the government execute the will of the governed or the will of those who finance its officials ? Does the Bill of Rights restrain the government ? Are the levers of government power pulled by those the governed have elected or those we don't see ? Do elections change anything?

Can the president kill people whom he suspects might commit a crime ? Aren't even those who would cause great harm entitled to due process ? Isn't everyone entitled to a fair trial in front of a neutral judge and jury before any punishment can be administered?

My 18-year old daughter is interested in international relations as she would like to become a diplomat. While writing letters of motivation as part of her applications to universities, we have been thinking and discussing diplomacy. The most obvious observation made by many commentators today is the dearth of real diplomacy. Even when there are negotiations they appear to be only ploys to make surprise attacks.

That we inhabit a post-truth world seems to accepted wisdom. But that's only half of it. We also live in a post-trust world. In a post-truth world, everything is shaped by the implicit goals of the entity claiming to state the "truth," as the entire point of claiming to state the "truth" is to persuade the target populace to agree to something favorable to the issuer of the claimed "truth."

Trump has announced a two-week ceasefire with Iran after previously threatening to exterminate their "entire civilization", citing "a 10 point proposal from Iran" as the reason for the climb-down.

Trump and his cronies are spinning this as a colossal victory for the United States and framing Tehran's 10-point plan as a major capitulation to the president's threats.

The "war crime" outcry is simply another collaboration between America's enemies, the media, and the Democrat Party.
